Stop thinking and start dancing!
Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman’s name is synonymous with tribal-style dance as it is known in American subculture today. In this unique and energizing workshop with Carolena, you will experience a series of creative, expansive, and engaging exercises that will turn your mind off and switch your body on.
Steeped in tradition with added contemporary flair, your steps and gestures will translate from consciousness to muscle memory, ultimately dancing you into a state of wakeful relaxation and joy.
You will learn:
By virtue of internalizing the movements and releasing your thought processes, you will be able to communicate with your partners without words, and allow the music to move you.
Come dance in community, shake off stress, express yourself in movement, and open up to new ways of feeling at home in your body. Whether you are looking for a new, fun way to exercise or you want to connect in a deeper way with the messages of your body, you will take home an exciting new practice.
Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman is creator of the popular American Tribal Style (ATS) Belly Dance.
Her childhood fascination with body-adornment evolved into the study of folkloric textiles, a body full of tattoos, and a personal collection of jewelry and textiles from around the world.
For eight years, beginning in 1974, Carolena danced with the San Francisco Classic Dance troupe, whose eclectic style was derived from classic Egyptian, folkloric, and other enticing influences.
Once she discovered belly dance, she was inspired to create ATS, which combines a vocabulary of natural movements and cues inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East and India, majestic costuming, and carefully chosen music that celebrates folk art of the old world.
Carolena has created a series of DVDs, CDs, and books that offer ATS instruction, performance, and inspiration.
Discover the basics of belly dance for fun and self-expression, drawing on ancient traditions and incorporating your own improvisations.
Open up to new possibilities physically, mentally, and emotionally with a fresh way to combine exercise and personal creativity.
Dance to the beat of your own drum in a supportive community that will celebrate your unique expression.
Download a sample schedule.
Bring zils (finger cymbals, also available for purchase at the workshop) and a scarf for your hips.
A full skirt is recommended but not mandatory; you can also simply wear comfortable clothing that allows for a free range of motion.
