New Ways of Seeing

Intensive Drawing Workshop

1440 Multiversity 800 Bethany Drive Scotts Valley,CA 95066

For many of us, drawing is a mysterious process, reserved for the few who are “talented.” Dr. Betty Edwards’ pioneering work Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain debunked that myth.

Join Kimberly von Brandenstein, a certified teacher of Betty Edwards’ program and faculty at the Princeton University Art Museum, for this intensive drawing workshop—a combination of lectures and studio exercises packing a semester-long art course into five days.

This workshop is designed to help you develop the perceptual skills necessary for drawing with confidence and a sense of mastery.

You will learn:

  • The relationship of drawing skills to the specialized functions of the right- and left-brain hemispheres
  • The basic strategies of “seeing” that will enable you to draw with a high degree of skill
  • To produce finished drawings of high quality.

Through a carefully sequenced process, you will learn how to draw, or how to enhance your drawing skills, and to develop new thinking strategies that increase your general problem-solving capacity.

Especially if you have never considered yourself an artist, you will leave with the newfound ability to enjoy drawing in ways you never thought possible, and with creative ways to perceive the world around you.

DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN

    MATERIALS LIST:

    1. 2B, 4B, 6B Drawing Pencil
    1. Woodless Drawing Pencil (4B or 6B optional, these are just fun tools)
    1. Hand held pencil sharpener. (It’s a good idea to buy a new one and test it before leaving the art supply store. The ones with little trashcans attached are especially nice.)
    1. 4B and 6B Graphite sticks
    1. Pencil-top Erasers (These fit on top of your pencils, and usually have a nice chisel shape, buy at least ten)
    1. White Plastic (click) Eraser
    1. Kneaded Eraser
    1. Vis-à-vis, water soluble marking pen
    1. 14” X 17” Strathmore Drawing Tablet #400 series, 80 lb.
    1. A drawing board or support for the tablet. I use a piece of tempered Masonite, which is about17” X 20”. If you choose something like foam core, make sure it is at least ½” thick, so that it doesn’t flex when you are drawing.
    1. A portfolio to hold your drawings, paper, and board, this could be a paper or cloth

portfolio, (some of them come with the drawing board inside).

    1. A ruler is optional; my favorite is the 18” flexible, cork backed ruler.

*It is often very difficult to procure drawing tools once the class begins, so try to have a complete set of tools when you arrive for the first class meeting.
