Program Description

What if there was an innovative way to address chronic pain? The Mindful Yoga for Chronic Pain Professional Training is just that. It's a unique 36-hour intensive course for yoga teachers, physical therapists, mental health therapists, and healthcare providers who wish to explore a groundbreaking, evidence-based program that provides lasting relief by addressing the neuroplasticity underlying chronic pain.

Developed by yoga therapist Kimberly Carson, MPH, C-IAYT, and health psychologist Jim Carson, PhD, this 5-day training is informed by decades of dedicated study, including Jim's 20+ years as a monk and the couple's extensive work in medical centers with people living with chronic pain.

Each day will involve a balance of interactive didactics, immersion in the Mindful Yoga protocol, meditation and posture practice, group work, and discussions.

You will learn:

  • To effectively and safely teach yoga-based practices to people living with chronic pain
  • How to help clients with conditions such as back pain, fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain refine their relationship to difficult sensations
  • Evidence-based techniques for addressing pain-related challenges such as fatigue and emotional distress
  • Ways you can tailor postures and breathing practices to meet a diverse range of needs.

The Carsons' extensive clinical research has repeatedly shown this approach leads to significantly less pain, fatigue, and emotional distress while increasing vigor, healthy acceptance, and relaxation.     Kimberly Carson is a mindfulness educator and yoga therapist at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). She specializes in the therapeutic use of mindfulness and yoga for seniors and people living with medical challenges and has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for over 20 years.
  • Jim CarsonAbout Jim Carson PhD |Health psychologist 
    Jim Carson is a health psychologist and former yogic monk who brings mindfulness meditation to patients suffering from chronic and illness-induced pain. He is currently a clinical health psychologist and associate professor in the departments of anesthesiology and psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).
