Paul Stamets, Author, mycologist, and researcher

Paul Stamets—speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher, and entrepreneur—is considered an intellectual and industry leader in fungi habitat, medicinal use, and production.

Studying psilocybin mushrooms since the mid-1970s, Paul has discovered and named numerous new species of psilocybin mushrooms and is the founder and owner of Fungi Perfecti, makers of the Host Defense Mushrooms supplement line.

Paul's philosophy is "mycodiversity is biosecurity" and his research continues to explore how strains of fungi can benefit neurogenensis, immune system and virus response, overall health, and larger ecosystem and biosphere resilience. He is the author of six books including Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World, Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, and Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World.

He has received numerous awards, including Invention Ambassador for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Mycologist Award from the North American Mycological Association (NAMA), and the Gordon and Tina Wasson Award from the Mycological Society of America (MSA). His visionary ideas have influenced pop culture, and in Star Trek: Discovery he is portrayed as astromycologist Lt. Paul Stamets.

Paul lectures extensively nationwide and collaborates with numerous scientific organizations and research institutes including the NIH (National Institutes of Health/Virology), Washington State University, and the United States Department of Agriculture.
