As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization since inception, 1440 serves the natural world as an inspirational catalyst of wonder and creativity. It was while spending time in her garden that co-creator Joanie Kriens recognized the beauty of the moment she was in and thought about the minutes in a single day we all have to experience the feeling of being alive. That's the inspiration for 1440 by Joanie and her husband Scott who decided to establish a 75-acre private learning and wellness retreat among the towering ancient redwoods of Scotts valley, California. Stay, explore and discover a generative energy where anyone can be inspired to pay forward in a collaborative community around the world.
  • What Is 1440?

    What Is 1440?

1440 represents the number of minutes in a single day. We are founded on the belief that each minute is a chance to connect with what truly matters - both within and around us. Deeper connections. Richer relationships. More compassionate communities. It all begins by heightening our awareness, expressing gratitude and being aware - deeply and without judgment - of ourselves and others even if only for a minute or two each day.
  • What is a 1440 Multiversity?

    What Is A Multiversity?

Unlike a university, which focuses on the intellect, a multiversity is a place for holistic learning that engages the mind, body, heart and shapes ones inner fitness. At 1440, we believe that the deepest learning happens when we nurture and awaken all aspects of ourselves. "Multi" represents the many doors and avenues one can enter or exit on their individual journey. And "versity" refers to the social, emotional and relational aspects of learning that we can use to shape to our desires and build more collaborative and connected communities.
  • What Does It Mean To Be Alive?

What Does It Mean To Be Alive?

Life is happening every moment. It can be beautiful and fulfilling and downright magical, and it can also be complicated, scary and uncertain. Forces inside and outside of our control can take us in directions we never could have anticipated and stretch us beyond where we ever thought we could reach. &nbps; Scott and Joanie wanted to build a place to enliven themselves and others to explore the unknown, and have conversations that matter about things that often aren't talked about. A place to be with ourselves and each other, to receive and give energy, to make discoveries, and to tap into our innate creativity, wisdom and intuition. A place of safety, revelation and renewal.

This work of being alive is highly personal and never ending. We hope you will join us.
  • Our Vision

The vision of inner and relational fitness defines our purpose at 1440 - the belief that, with practice and support, we can build richer and more meaningful lives based on a commitment to fitness within, throughout, and across ourselves. We are excited by the further belief that this is not mystical or abstract, but achievable in practical terms, teachable and realizable with practice. As a nonprofit, we invite people into a community of mindfulness. Through your stay, you are contributing to the growth of a more mindful and healthy society. We thank you for that contribution.

Traveler’s Insights

What is mindfulness?
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we're doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what's going on around us. Whenever you bring awareness to what you are directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you are being mindful. Growing research shows that when you train your brain to be mindful, you are transforming the physical structure of your brain.
1440 Luminary Faculty Definitions of Mindfulness:

SYLVIA BOORSTEIN — "Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it."
DAN SIEGEL— "Mindfulness in its most general sense is about waking up from a life on automatic and being sensitive to novelty in our everyday experiences. With mindful awareness the flow of energy and information that is our mind enters our conscious attention and we can both appreciate its contents and come to regulate its flow in a new way.

JON KABAT-ZINN — "Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally."

SHARON SALZBERG — "Mindfulness isn't just about knowing that you're hearing something, seeing something, or even observing that you're having a particular feeling. It's about doing so in a certain way—with balance and equanimity, and without judgment. Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention in a way that creates space for insight."

What is the difference between wellness and well-being?
What is the difference between wellness and well-being?
Wellness is more closely associated with health and prevention, while well-being is related to one's overall happiness. While most of us use the terms well-being and wellness interchangeably, there is a distinctive difference. Well-being refers to a more holistic, whole of life experience, whereas wellness refers to physical health. Well-being is a good feeling condition of existence. A state characterized by your health, happiness, and prosperity. Wellness is the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, as a result of deliberate effort. At 1440 we foster both. What is the difference between shared and paired accommodations?

Two guests that know each other or that are related may share a room, provided each guest is independently registered because all pricing is arranged on a per person package basis. Since all guests who stay at 1440 must be registered to learn, there are no options for anyone to share a room with you without being registered and paying the per person package price. If you are traveling alone, you may request a shared accommodation, which means 1440 will randomly pair you with a gender-specific roommate.

Guests who have a desired roommate are each required to register and request one another as roommates. Guests who have no preference can book a shared accommodation and will meet their roommate upon arrival to 1440. In most cases, whether sharing with someone you know or being paired with someone you don’t know, you will all be utilizing a community hall (dorm-style) bathroom.

1440 is not a hotel, and as an inclusionary learning destination we offer nontraditional housing options that include the ability to "share" accommodations with another program goers—essentially lowering the overall cost of the program package by agreeing to share a room with up to seven potential roommates (in our pods) and utilizing a community hall bathroom. For those that prefer, a traditional private room is available, some of which include in-room private bathrooms. When registering for your program, be sure to select the room option you prefer. What is a commuter?
What is a commuter?
Commuters are students who pay for the entire package to attend the full program, including all meals, but are not provided with overnight accommodations. You will need to arrange and pay for your own accommodations offsite and only certain programs offer commuter options—generally once campus housing is full. Learn More About What is a commuter?

"The chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you, as perfect, as unspoiled, as if you had never wasted or misapplied a single moment in all your life. You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose."
