Zen and the Art of Photography

1440 Multiversity 800 Bethany Drive Scotts Valley,CA 95066

Rethink your expectations of what it means to “see.” Revitalize your imagery by exploring relationships between subject, camera, and self. Redefine what is essential about your approach to creative expression.

In this workshop with internationally renowned photographer Douglas Beasley, you will work on cultivating simplicity and making more powerful photographs, supporting the notion that a photograph is not “taken” but “made.”

You will experience daily field trips, along with photo exercises and site-specific assignments selected for their unique potential for internal and external experience and growth. Zen and the Art of Photography provides a balance of conversation, meditation, sharing photos, critiques, writing exercises, readings, and poetry.

You will learn to:

  • Deepen your visual awareness
  • Make images that are both more personal and more meaningful
  • Connect with your inner self and use that awareness to deepen your connection with subjects, whether people, places, or things
  • Develop the power of intuition fueled by the proper balance of contemplation and decisiveness.

During these five days, Douglas offers a challenging invitation to create more powerful imagery by cultivating simplicity. You will also become sensitive to choices of lighting, composition, depth-of-field, and exposure issues and benefit from practical advice you can take into your ongoing photo making long after the workshop.
