The Story of 1440 Multiversity

Nearly a decade ago, 1440 Multiversity co-creator Joanie Kriens was inspired while tending to and harvesting vegetables in her home garden. In that mindful moment, she was overcome by feelings of happiness, contentment, and joy - for the colorful tomatoes and squash in her basket, the quiet beauty of the land, and the preciousness of life with her family and friends.

This heightened awareness and gratitude may have only lasted just a minute or two, yet it had a profound effect on Joanie. It made her wonder how many minutes there are in each day, and how we might all live more self-aware with gratitude for the simple blessings in life. After turning to Google for the answer, the 1440 name was born - little did she know she would find it in her own backyard.

Following several years of philanthropic grant-making, the 1440 Multiversity campus opened in May 2017 among the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, stemming from a desire to establish a beautiful and nurturing physical location where community could gather to explore, learn, reflect, connect, and re-energize. The invitation to participate is extended to all unbound by the range of human differences.

Joanie and Scott Kriens started the 1440 Foundation in 2010, recognizing the blazing success of the internet catalyzed powerful connections yet did not help people connect to their authentic selves. Making time for ourselves and our relationships is important but has a way of slipping down our personal "to-do" list.
Yet there are 1440 minutes in every day available to each of us to be more aware, more authentic, more empathic and more connected. With a deep desire to be closer to the work they so admire, they opened 1440 Multiversity in 2017 and since that time, more than 100,000 individuals have visited the campus and benefited from the variety of classes, embodied movement, private events, grants and scholarships offered.

1440 Foundation

When it began in 2010, the 1440 Foundation was entirely focused on philanthropic grant-making in support of individuals and organizations committed to helping others grow in relationship, spirit and wellness. Today, its mission is focused on:
  • Cancer Collaboration: Empowering people with hope, new treatments and innovative options to live beyond pancreatic cancer
  • Inner Wellbeing: Advancing the field of inner fitness to unlock the potential within each person to heal and thrive
  • Community Building: Supporting nonprofit leaders who nurture compassion and trust in our communities

1440 Foundation aligns with leaders and organizations who have a similar vision of real-world evidence and applications that lead to practical solutions. It then invests in those organizations by providing financial support and in-kind grants to help energize their passions and realize their goals while furthering the 1440 Foundation mission to advance cancer collaboration, inner wellbeing, and community building.
