Program Description

Are you a healthcare professional interested in helping your patients become pain-free? Unlearn Your Pain is a revolutionary approach to treating chronic pain that has helped thousands of people when traditional medical approaches have failed.

Join Professor Howard Schubiner, MD, director of the Mind-Body Medicine Program at Providence Hospital, and empower your practice. Incorporate concrete knowledge of an emerging model of care that brings together cutting-edge research and advanced clinical interventions. Through lecture, role-playing, and demonstrations, you will:

  • Analyze the core concepts that pain is a function of the brain, that not all injuries result in pain, and that pain can be due to lifetime trauma and unresolved emotional experiences
  • Explain how "medically unexplained" disorders, including headaches, neck and back pain, abdominal and pelvic pain, TMJ, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and insomnia are best conceptualized as being psychophysiologic in nature
  • Explain the concepts to your clients
  • Identify skills and specific scripts to identify and counsel patients with chronic pain caused by the brain
  • Describe how pain occurs and the role that the brain plays in its development and persistence
  • Distinguish the role that the brain is playing in individuals with pain
  • Demonstrate how to interview clients to assess for the causes of chronic pain
  • Identify the models of pain and the relevant psychological treatments and current research on chronic pain
  • Describe how to provide information to a client to help them understand the role of the brain in pain and the possibility of recovery
  • Demonstrate cognitive and behavioral techniques to reprogram neural pathways of pain
  • Identify the role of emotions in chronic pain
  • Demonstrate how to guide clients to experience, express, and release emotions
  • Describe expressive writing exercises for chronic pain recovery
  • Describe meditative exercises for chronic pain recovery
  • Describe how to counsel clients who have difficulties in recovery
  • Describe how to incorporate this approach into a social work practice.

This training is suitable for professionals—including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, coaches, bodyworkers, and other therapists—who work with clients or patients with chronic pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue, and other associated symptoms.

You'll leave with a combination of effective educational, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional clinical practices you can use right away to help your patients eliminate chronic pain.
